The Crater, Atherton Tablelands

This crater is a diatreme - an explosion pipe with no volcanic material like lava. It is formed by a violent gas explosion as the gases blast their way through a crack in the granite during volcanic activity. Mt Hypipamee nearby is formed by the actual volcano so this crater is like a side shoot off it. It is only about 100m radius and filled with water and who knows what under that green layer. We are looking down into the circular pool here.
