UK and Europe Roadtrip - Ghent

This is called Gravensteen, the Castle of the Counts. It dates back to 1180 when it was the residence of the Count of Flanders. It continued to be used by the Counts until the mid 1300s before it was re-purposed as a court then a prison. This medieval fortress in the centre of Ghent, has not been lived in for centuries.
