UK and Europe Roadtrip - Rila Monastery

The Rila Monastery was built here during the 1300s and named after Saint John of Rila, a hermit monk who lived in a cave nearby around 900AD. Two of the oldest buildings on this site are the Tower of Hrelja (1334–1335) and a small church beside it (1343). Select the photo below to see the decorated arch ceiling.
