Not only monks but teachers, painters, wood carvers and icon painters stayed here at Rila Monastery. The occupation of Bulgaria by the Turks (Ottomans) at the end of the 1300s was the start of many destructive raids on the monastery. It had to be rebuilt significantly at the end of the 1400s.
