Boodjamulla National Park - Riversleigh Fossils

This is a fossil of a turtle shell about 25 million years old. When it died the shell sunk to the river bed and was covered with limey mud and was fossilised. The Gulf Snapping Turtle is a descendent of this ancient turtle. We saw some of the snapping turtles on a log while canoeing the day before but they were camera shy!
