Ngatokimatawhaorua is named after the great canoe of Kupe, traditional Polynesian ancestor of the Maori people. It is said to be the largest war canoe in the world and is housed here in Waitangi Grounds. The carvings on the canoe and also on the wooden structure where it is housed are very impressive.
