Auckland to Cape Reinga, New Zealand

This Maori Whare Runanga (Meeting Place) was completed in 1940 for the centenary celebrations. The finely detailed carvings represent the major Maori tribes present at the 1840 treaty signed between Maori and the British Crown. It is New Zealand's founding document and today, the Treaty of Waitangi still has a major impact on all New Zealanders. It established British law in New Zealand, while at the same time guaranteeing Maori authority over their land and culture.   Select the photo below to see inside this building.
