Haast to Greymouth, New Zealand

The Waiho River emerges from the glacier terminal of Franz Josef Glacier just 19km from the Tasman Sea. The glacier is about 12 km long and was still growing in 2007 because of the strong snowfall in the area. By mid 2010 this advance ended and the glacier started retreating again. It is usually a cyclic thing but global warming may put a stop to that. Select the photo below to see this area up closer.
