Farewell Spit to Foxton Beach, New Zealand

We wanted to get to the most northerly point of the South Island and thought that Farewell Spit would be it but actually it bends around to the east and Cape Farewell is more northerly than here. The sea currents pile up the sand on the curved hook shape spit and it continues to grow in length. It was interesting nonetheless to walk out along a narrow stretch of sand that is about 26 km long but goes for another 6 km further underwater! No, we didn't walk that far! It is all protected as a sea bird and wild life reserve and they only allow you to walk the first 4km.
