Farewell Spit to Foxton Beach, New Zealand

We weren't able to get onto the last ferry of the day that would take us across Cook Strait to the North Island, so after a bit of a look around Picton, we headed just 5km south to a rest area at Mt Pleasant (campsite 17). And pleasant it was! We set ourselves up for our usual sunset drinks and nibblies and had a Marlborough Pinot Gris we had picked up on our travels. On the South Island we had stayed at only 1 Caravan Park (Queenstown) and 1 DOC site (Fiordland National Park) and all the rest of our campsites were free camps. As long as you have a camper with toilet and shower on board, you can do this quite easily in the South Island. I expect to use a lot more DOC sites (great value and great locations) in the North island, which is more heavily populated.
