Wanganui to Lake Taupo, New Zealand

Towards the southern end of Patea we came across this Whale Bones sculpture which is the work of artist Kim Jarrett called the Garden of Tutunui. The Taranaki Arts Festival Trust commissioned it in 2006.The story comes from the Pacific Islands and has links to Patea traditions. Tutunui the whale was the pet of the great chief Tinirau.  Select the photo below to see more artwork in the area - a giant Waka (canoe).
