Perth to Yallingup

After leaving Perth we had a look around Fremantle then drove down the coast road stopping at Mandurah and crossing the man-made Dawesville Cut that allows Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary to flush out to the Indian Ocean. This was done to solve a blue green algae problem that once threatened environmental disaster to the area. From there we drove to Lake Clifton to see the thrombolites. These 'living rocks' (microbialites) are similar to the stromatolites we had seen further north. They grow at 1mm a year by drawing calcium carbonate out of the lime enriched lake water to form rock-like material during photosynthesis.
