Gibraltar and Spanish Sth Coast

We finally had to show our passport! And get it stamped! When we left England for France it was before 8am so nobody was manning the border control and since then we have crossed a number of borders but it is as if the borders do not exist with the Schengen Treaty. It is different if you fly but by car you can drive anywhere (except here it seems) without anyone checking.
