Sydney, New South Wales

Kirribilli House, the Prime Minister's residence, overlooks the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. The history of Kirribilli House began in 1854 when the land, approximately half a hectare at Kirribilli Point, was bought for 200 pounds. In 1855 a Gothic revival style residence, Kirribilli House, was erected on the site. The Prime Minister, Rt Hon W M Hughes, gave his approval for the purchase or compulsory acquisition of the property and the land was resumed by special Commonwealth Gazette on 17 January 1920. It was restored in 1957 and redecorated in 1980
