Tanna Island, Vanuatu

We skirted around the ash plain so that we could take the track up closer to the summit. Here at the base of Yasur there was, until 2000, a small body of water named Lake Siwi which drained rapidly when the eroded banks gave way. Now there is a just a shallow creek and set of waterfalls. When it rains heavily this creek becomes an impassable river and the falls become quite spectacular. That happened the following night and the tours could not reach the volcano.
