Fairbanks to Valdez, Alaska Canada Holiday

The Black Rapids Glacier hit the news in 1937 when it was noticed that it was advancing at a very fast rate. It never advanced past the Delta River to block the Richardson Highway but measurements indicated that it advanced about one mile each month between December 3, 1936, and March 7, 1937. It has since retreated and left a lot of moraine behind. The 27-mile-long glacier is called a "surge-type glacier". Right now it is retreating and building up snow and ice in its upper regions. One day that bulk may trigger another rapid advance of Black Rapids Glacier.
