Fairbanks to Valdez, Alaska Canada Holiday

Worthington Glacier is one of the most accessible glaciers in Alaska. We climbed up to the edge of the ice and into the large cracks where the ice met the moraine. The ice was an amazing blue colour. For the budding scientists amongst us, that is because the glacier acts like a filter absorbing red light, making the crevasse appear blue. If it was only a centimeter thick, all the light would make it through but because it is thick, mostly blue light makes it through. The glacier has been slowly but steadily retreating for the last 150 years even though about 9 metres of snow collects in the upper basin each year.
