Vienna lies in the northeastern corner of Austria between the Alps and the Carpathians and sits beside the Danube River. It was on the ancient trade and military routes. In the 1800s, a section of the Danube was straightened to form the Danube Canal that provides flood control for the city. The island created by this adds to Vienna's parklands.
