Broken Hill, New South Wales

Broken Hill celebrated its centenary in 1988. One of the world's major lead-silver-zinc ore bodies, called the Line of Lode, still has a little life left in it after being mined continuously for over 110 years. This is the disused Delprats mine where we put on our miner's hat, boots and a heavy belt with batteries for our helmet light, before descending in the miners' cage – jammed with thirty or more people – 130m below the surface.
