Bundaberg - Mon Repos Turtle Rookery - Queensland

This is the track from the visitor centre to the beach where most turtles come in from late November to late January. The nesting involves the journey up the beach by the female turtle, the digging of the nesting pit and the egg chamber (60cm deep at the rear), laying the eggs, covering the nest with sand and the trip back to the ocean. Eight weeks later the hatchlings break through the shells, climb to the surface and emerge at night then scurry to the ocean as fast as possible.
