Dunedin to Catlins to Bluff

As we drove along the Catlin Coast we were surprised that many houses were built right on the edge of the beach. What a great view!! They mustn't have too many big storms here? Click here to see what I mean. This coastal drive around the Catlin Coast is definitely worth doing if you have the time rather than sticking to the main highway. That is Nugget Point Lighthouse, built in 1870, in the distance. To get a proper feel for ‘The Nuggets’ we are told they are best visited at sunrise when the rock pillars and outcrops take on the orange glow of the sun. Unfortunately it was too early for us to stop so you will have to imagine that photo. Select the photo below to see the point and lighthouse close up. You can see how it got its name with the many 'nuggets' in the water out from Nugget Point.
