It was after reading The Iliad, in the 1860s, that a wealthy merchant decided that the ancient city of Troy must be buried somewhere around the area known as the mound of Hisarlik. Excavations began with treasure in mind but became more scientific as more was uncovered and the importance of the finds were realised. Select the photo below to see more.
