UK and Europe Roadtrip - Colchester

The gatehouse wasn't built until around 1400 after the Peasant's Revolt to strengthen Colchester Abbey's defences. It has turrets in the corners and ornamented niches for statues and ribbed stone vaulting supporting the ceilings. It is built of flint, brick and limestone. Inside St Johns Abbey Gatehouse there is not much to see. It consists of a gate hall and a porter’s lodge.
