UK and Europe Roadtrip - Colchester

This is St Johns Abbey Gatehouse which is all that remains of the wealthy Benedictine abbey of St John in Colchester. The abbey was founded in 1096 and dissolved by King Henry VIII in 1539 as was the fate of all abbeys and priories at that time. Some buildings were used as a residence for a time but all except this gate were demolished in the mid 1600s.
