Alaska and Canada Holiday

The next morning we did the short walk around Earthquake Park and part of the Coastal Trail around Cook's Inlet (both interesting and worth a look) before heading out of Anchorage about 1pm. We were surprised the weather was pretty much the same as it was in Brisbane (Australia's winter = Alaska's summer). Jeans and a T Shirt were adequate - and we had brought all that winter gear over expecting it to be cold!

We visited Chugach National Park, had lunch and walked to Thunderbird Falls along Eklutna Creek in the Mat-su Valley. Cottonwood Trees were dropping 'cotton' like snow here and lots of other places for the two weeks we were in Alaska. We passed Wasila, which looked a bit like a shanty town with a jumble of very small 'shops' in questionable condition lining the highway. We later found this was quite common in Alaska. We stopped at Talkeetna which is a quaint tourist town which also had these tiny stores - interesting place to wander through. We camped on the Talkeetna River bed. Photo below was taken getting the fire ready to cook dinner sometime about 9pm. Sitting around a fire that night with sunglasses on because of the glare didn't seem quite right - still daylight and not a star in sight!
