Fairbanks and Arctic Circle, Alaska

Up early and ready to go we were a bit disappointed when we found they had mixed up our booking and we were on the 2pm plane. We decided to drive out to Chena Hot Springs which is just an hour east of Fairbanks. Very nice drive. You can choose the indoor pool and hot tubs which are chlorinated geothermal water, or the natural outdoor Rock Lake which is for over 18s only. Water is constantly being drained from the Lake and it naturally refills, turning over 2-3 times the volume of the lake each day. There are also smaller ponds, not for swimming in. They also have an Ice Museum (ice sculptures) here which was closed but looks interesting. Next to that they are drilling 3000ft to explore the use of Thermal Energy in this area.
