Fairbanks to Valdez, Alaska Canada Holiday

We continued south spotting the Wrangell St Elias Mountains off in the distance every now and then. There were lakes and rivers everywhere - mostly the Tanana River and its tributories. The trees on the flood plain where often at various odd angles. We were told they call it a 'drunken forest' and it is caused by the uneven freezing and thawing of the ground. Stopping for petrol (gas in US speak), we were surprised when the attendant used a marker pen on $100 and $50 notes. Apparently it is a check to see if it is counterfeit - if it comes out light brown it is OK, dark brown is counterfeit. We had wondered why most of the notes had pen marks on them.
