Horizontal Falls and Derby

The 12m tidal fluctuations cause the water to run very quickly in and out of King Sound at Derby. You can see the current here at the moorings for the seaplane as it rushes past. The water is always muddy brown and silty because of this continuous movement in and out of creeks, mudflats and mangroves. It never settles. The jetty is very high but has a number of levels that you can access the boats from depending on the tide at the time. Interesting but not a pretty sight!
