Alaska and Canada Holiday

You can get on and off the shuttle buses that run every half hour through Denali National Park from 4:10am - 12:40am. Yes, you didn't read that wrongly, that is after midnight - people don't seem to do much sleeping here in summer! We stopped at Savage River to do the 2 mile loop walk. As soon as we got off the bus someone told us that there was a Ptarmigan down on the track. I asked the next person we passed "What's a tarmigan?" and they replied "About 8 o'clock" and kept walking. Accents! We later found out it was Alaska's National Bird - it is pure white with big feathery feet in the winter to camouflage in the snow but have a look at the photo of the ptarmigan in summer.
